Choose digital training using evidence
Start with the capability you want to exercise and the evidence you should be able to produce. Then compare curriculum, prerequisites and assessment. A fashionable tool or recruitment promise is insufficient grounds for choosing a course.
Define the career and starting point
Select representative tasks: building and testing an interface, writing a SQL query, conducting a user interview or analysing a campaign. Inspect career descriptions and actual vacancies to identify expected skills without treating them as employment guarantees.
Try a short exercise to assess existing knowledge. Ask about technical prerequisites, independent study, required software and access conditions. Programmes labelled beginner can have substantially different expectations.
Check the advertised certification
For a French professional certification, find the exact title and code in France compétences registers. Its record allows you to check validity, expected skills and organisations authorised to prepare it; for RNCP qualifications, also inspect level and skill blocks.
Ask which qualification the programme prepares and who performs assessment. A participation certificate differs from a registered professional certification. Registration alone establishes neither suitability for you nor successful completion.
Examine the work you will do
Request a sample exercise, assessment criteria and an explanation of feedback. Check whether practice involves varied problems or merely copying demonstrations. Projects should enable you to explain decisions, tests and limitations.
Check instructor availability, adjustments for access needs and support when difficulties arise. For remote study, clarify schedules, equipment, live sessions and access to materials afterwards. For an apprenticeship, distinguish the provider’s placement support from your own responsibilities.
Compare commitments and full costs
Use one record for tuition, equipment, available time, travel and examination costs. Confirm funding and cancellation conditions with the relevant organisations before committing. Possible funding does not mean approved funding.
For employment figures, ask about cohort, period, sample, response rate and definition of employment. Compare compatible methods. Keep the dated curriculum and your questions with the decision, then plan how you will continue practising.
A record to keep with the decision
| Item | Evidence |
|---|---|
| Need | Career goal, expected tasks, prior knowledge and available time. |
| Recognition | Certification code, validity and authorised provider where applicable. |
| Learning | Exercises, feedback, assessment, accessibility and support. |

Frequently asked questions
Can a short course be useful?
Yes, for a focused skill when prerequisites are already met. For a career change, examine whether the programme covers the actual tasks and underlying knowledge and allows enough practice.
Can an employment rate decide the choice?
The number needs its method: population, cohort, period and definition of employment. Without that context, comparison is difficult; it does not predict your individual outcome.
